Cartoonist Lee Woo-il reflected on his comic life during an interview at a cafe in Jongno-gu, Seoul, on the 20th. At 57, he debuted 33 years ago with self-published comics and gained public affection under the nickname 'eccentric cartoonist.' His representative works, 'Donald Duck' and 'Nobinson,' enjoyed great popularity in the early 2000s. However, he humbly stated that he does not consider himself a mainstream cartoonist.
Recently, Lee Woo-il published his new work, 'Lee Woo-il's Comics on Greek and Roman Mythology,' attempting a heavy ink wash style that differs from his past comic styles. He expressed, "It's not grand, but I wanted to find a changed appearance, an upgraded version compared to before." He also mentioned that he does not draw webtoons because he feels he lacks the capability to serialize online, preferring graphic novels instead.
He noted that his perspective on comics has changed with age, stating, "In the past, I had a strong tendency to reject the system, but now I prefer to show a critical view through gentle metaphors." Rather than clinging to past glory, Lee Woo-il focuses on his current work, adding, "I prefer to keep changing rather than maintaining consistency." His new work presents a different direction from his past comics, offering readers new insights.
