Leaders of China, Russia and India are among the heads of state gathering in Kyrgyzstan this week for the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, a group billed as a counterweight to U.S. global influence. Chinese President Xi Jinping attended a welcoming ceremony at the Yntymak Ordo state residence in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, on August 31, 2026. Russian President Vladimir Putin was greeted by the Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan, Adylbek Kasymaliev, upon his arrival for the SCO Summit.
During the summit, discussions were held regarding strengthening cooperation between China and Kyrgyzstan. Xi Jinping and Kyrgyz President Sadyr Zhaparov shook hands during a signing ceremony, indicating their commitment to deepen bilateral relations. Additionally, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres was present at the summit, engaging with various leaders on international issues.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also arrived in Kyrgyzstan to participate in the summit. This meeting is seen as a significant opportunity for SCO member states to strategize on countering U.S. influence.
