The world's largest artificial intelligence (AI) semiconductor company, NVIDIA, has decided to invest $3.5 billion in Taiwanese semiconductor firm MediaTek. This collaboration aims to assist MediaTek in expanding its business from semiconductors for smartphones to those for AI data centers.
NVIDIA plans to invest in MediaTek's overseas convertible bonds. This bond issuance is the largest in MediaTek's history, with participation from Alphabet, Google's parent company, although the investment amount has not been disclosed. Through this collaboration, NVIDIA intends for MediaTek to utilize its technology to design AI chips and connect them to NVIDIA's large-scale computing systems.
The two companies will continue to collaborate in the areas of semiconductors for PCs and AI-based automotive technology. NVIDIA recently expressed confidence in the growth of the AI market, projecting a 70% increase in revenue next year. However, there are concerns regarding 'circular financing' due to the large capital injection. Portfolio manager Joe Tighe assessed that NVIDIA's funding would help expand the technological framework. CEO Huang emphasized that this investment is not circular and mentioned MediaTek's independent business operations.
NVIDIA's investment is interpreted as a strategy to broaden its influence beyond AI chip sales to the overall AI ecosystem. As competition in the AI chip market intensifies, it remains to be seen how well NVIDIA can maintain its current market dominance.
