Two students from the baseball team at Paichai High School recently expressed their intention to quit the team to the school. They caused controversy by shouting the slogan "Let's go to Starbucks" directed at the opposing team, Gwangju Ilgo, during the Cheongryonggi National High School Baseball Championship held at Mokdong Baseball Stadium in Seoul on June 29.
This slogan was interpreted as a derogatory remark related to the May 18 Tank Day incident, leading to a six-month suspension from competition imposed by the Korea Baseball Softball Association. However, the Paichai High School baseball team later visited Gwangju Jeil High School to apologize and paid respects at the May 18 Democratic Cemetery, which resulted in the penalty being reduced to one month.
The school imposed severe penalties on the two students who initiated the slogan, while lighter penalties were decided for the other ten students who echoed it. This decision reflects the serious perspective of both the school and society regarding the students' actions.
