The Donald Trump administration reaffirmed on the 26th (local time) that there is no change in its existing North Korea policy aimed at complete denuclearization. A State Department spokesperson responded to a query from Yonhap News by stating, "The United States remains committed to the complete denuclearization of North Korea." Another U.S. official added, "There is no change in U.S. policy."
Recently, President Trump directed a significant reduction in the U.S.-South Korea annual joint exercise 'Eulji Freedom Guardian' (UFS), sending a conciliatory message to North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. He hinted at a meeting with Kim but avoided a clear answer regarding the maintenance of the denuclearization goal.
The South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs also stated on the 25th that both the U.S. and South Korea continue to aim for the complete denuclearization of North Korea amid concerns that the U.S. might tolerate North Korea's nuclear possession. Spokesperson Park Doo-sun emphasized that the two countries consistently maintain their goals for peace on the Korean Peninsula and denuclearization, referencing the joint explanatory materials from the U.S.-South Korea summit.
