The National Assembly's Committee on Trade, Industry, Energy, and Small and Medium Enterprises is moving to hold a hearing that would summon Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong and SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won as witnesses concerning the semiconductor cluster investment in Honam. Kim Seong-won, a member of the committee from the People Power Party, stated that they plan to invite both chairmen as witnesses.
The People Power Party is questioning Chey’s change of stance on semiconductor investment in Honam within just two months. During a policy seminar held in April this year, Chey mentioned, "We need to go where there is electricity," and added, "But I am not sure if a semiconductor factory must necessarily be there." This statement raised concerns among the members of the People Power Party.
Recently, Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Kim Jeong-kwan stated at a full committee meeting that the government had made proposals regarding the necessary sites for businesses, but the final decision was made by the companies. However, difficulties are anticipated in holding the hearing due to the need for cooperation from the Democratic Party. The People Power Party argues that it is necessary to clarify these circumstances.
