Seoul has strongly urged the resumption of talks between the US and North Korea, emphasizing that strong military deterrence should back these discussions. Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back stated that the South Korean military is ready to support diplomacy.
Ahn expressed hope for a meeting between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, arguing that renewed talks could positively impact security on the Korean Peninsula and globally. He asserted that dialogue between the US and North Korea should eventually lead to renewed discussions between Seoul and Pyongyang.
As part of efforts to reduce tensions, Seoul has dismantled border loudspeakers and is preparing to resume remains recovery work near White Horse Hill. Ahn warned that deterrence without dialogue is dangerous, while dialogue without deterrence is vulnerable, calling for a balance between military strength and engagement. The Seoul Defense Dialogue brought together around 1,000 officials and experts from 67 countries and international organizations to discuss regional security and coexistence.
