Kim Min-seok, the leader of the Democratic Party, expressed his determination for comprehensive reform by pointing out six major issues within the police organization related to the controversy over the false conclusion of the Jeju missing persons case. At a Supreme Council meeting held in Andong, Gyeongsangbuk-do on the 26th, he emphasized, "The Jeju case is causing public outrage," and noted, "This happened while the prosecutors' supplementary investigation rights were in effect."
He mentioned issues within the police organization such as "protecting their own, concealing cases, unauthorized closures, evidence concealment and manipulation, leaking investigation information, and infringing on personal information," vowing to eradicate these problems. Drawing from his past experience as Prime Minister, Kim Min-seok highlighted the importance of police reform alongside prosecutorial reform and stated that he requested the establishment of a police reform plan.
As specific directions for reform, he proposed expanding external audits, strengthening grounds for investigation disqualification, enhancing victim explanations, and increasing legal accountability for illegal and inadequate investigations. He stated, "We will protect investigations that safeguard the public and firmly reform investigative powers that infringe on citizens' rights." Additionally, the Democratic Party announced the formation of a police reform promotion team, appointing Representative Kim Nam-hee as its head.
