Lee Jun-seok, the leader of the Reform Party, resigned from his position on the 26th. In a press conference, he stated that he had been contemplating and proposing ideas for the party's self-strengthening and reform since the local elections, but did not receive adequate support within the party. He explained that "we are faced with an unavoidable political schedule" as the reason for his resignation.
With Lee's resignation, the entire leadership of the Reform Party has also resigned, and the party is set to hold a convention to elect new leadership. Lee represents the Dongtan district in Gyeonggi Province, and fractures in the adjustment of district representation with proportional representatives were also pointed out as a background for his resignation. The Reform Party has been struggling, having only elected one basic council member in the recent local elections.
Following Lee's resignation, floor leader Cheon Ha-ram will take over as acting party leader, and a convention is expected to be held within 60 days. However, there are opinions within the party suggesting that Lee made his resignation decision emotionally. Lee plans to focus on managing his constituency for the time being, and there are forecasts that political space may be difficult to open up.
