The Nepalese government has recently classified the recent floods as a disaster resulting from climate change and announced plans to seek compensation from major greenhouse gas emitting countries such as China, the United States, and India. Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal emphasized through social media that "it is time for us to strongly raise the issue of the disasters we are facing as a result of climate change to the international community."
He added that this flood is not merely a natural disaster but is recognized as a major disaster in the region. He also pointed out that the risks in the Himalayan region are increasing with climate change, stating that continuous vigilance in this area is necessary.
Nepal's Foreign Minister Pradeep Gyawali stated in a local TV interview that despite Nepal's minimal greenhouse gas emissions, the country is paying the price for a global crisis. He described the flood as a "Himalayan tsunami," explaining that it is a direct result of climate change. Minister Gyawali emphasized that major greenhouse gas emitting countries have a responsibility to compensate vulnerable nations and stated that he would raise this issue strongly on the international stage.
