A devastating flood struck the Nepal-China border at Rasuwagadhi, leading to significant destruction and loss of life. CCTV footage captured the moments before the flood, showing a torrent of water, mud, and debris sweeping through the area. On the day of the flood, the border crossing was unusually busy, with immigration records showing that 89 Nepali and foreign nationals had cleared immigration to leave Nepal. Tika Ram Pokharel, a surviving immigration officer, noted that around 300 to 400 people were waiting to cross into Tibet when the flood hit.
The flood was triggered by the collapse of a glacier, which researchers believe caused the sudden surge of water. The region is geologically vulnerable, characterized by steep gorges and fast-flowing rivers, making it prone to such disasters. Experts are calling for measures to enhance safety in the area as rescue operations continue and the search for missing persons is ongoing.
