North Korea has implemented personnel changes in its military leadership. According to the Korean Central News Agency, a discussion on the job changes of key military commanders took place at the second meeting of the 9th Central Military Commission chaired by Kim Jong-un.
As a result of the meeting, Park Jong-chun has returned as Vice Chairman of the Central Military Commission, overseeing North Korea's military policy. He has also re-entered the list of Central Committee members and Politburo members. There had been speculation that Park would step back from frontline duties following the 9th Party Congress in February, but he has re-emerged as a key figure in the military after about six months.
Additionally, Defense Minister No Kwang-chul has been dismissed, and Kim Sung-ki has been appointed as the new Defense Minister. Kim Sung-ki was previously the head of the General Political Bureau of the People’s Army, and this appointment is interpreted as a strong measure to address corruption issues within the military. Furthermore, Yoo Kwang-woo has been appointed as the First Deputy Director of the General Political Bureau, and Um Joo-ho has been appointed as the Director of the People’s Army Security Bureau. The Central Military Commission expressed expectations that the newly appointed commanders will faithfully implement the party's military policies and guidelines.
