A tragic incident occurred when the passenger ship 'Philojet', which had departed from the port of Kyrenia in Northern Cyprus, capsized, leading to 8 fatalities and 18 individuals reported missing. The vessel set sail on the 30th with 267 passengers and crew members onboard, and approximately 15 minutes later, it began taking on water about 7.5 kilometers from the coast.
Survivors reported that the ship was rocking abnormally and collided forcefully with the water at the end. This caused damage to the catamaran's bow, allowing water to flood into the interior of the vessel. Northern Cypriot authorities urgently deployed the coast guard and private vessels, successfully rescuing 241 of the passengers, while the captain and 7 crew members have been detained for investigation.
The exact cause of the accident has not yet been determined, and the capsized ship sank to the seabed at a depth of 514 meters later that afternoon. This incident has sent shockwaves through the Northern Cyprus region, and rescue operations are ongoing.
