The U.S. is exploring a proposal to recover U.S. military remains from North Korea in preparation for a summit. Despite North Korea pushing back against this, the U.S. is persistently working to keep the dialogue alive. In a virtual discussion held in Washington D.C., Kelly McKeague, director of the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency, mentioned the possibility of cooperation with North Korea and stated that preparations are in place for the recovery of remains of U.S. soldiers missing from the Korean War.
McKeague proposed the recovery of over 5,300 U.S. military remains in North Korea, a topic that was also mentioned by President Trump during his 2018 summit with Kim Jong-un. Recently, President Trump spoke positively about the situation regarding North Korea and responded positively to questions about Kim Jong-un's lack of response. However, North Korea maintains that it will not provide the desired answers.
This U.S. approach is interpreted as an attempt to quell dissatisfaction stemming from issues related to the Iran war and the economy ahead of the November midterm elections. However, there are concerns that these dialogue attempts could merely inflate North Korea's bargaining position. The U.S. has begun practical preparations with North Korea and continues its efforts for a future summit.
