Seoul residents have identified traffic congestion, late-night crime, and fine dust as the top problems they want technology to address. This conclusion comes from a survey of 8,531 residents conducted both online and offline in February 2025, released as the city outlines its tech-forward upgrades through 2030.
Transportation emerged as the primary concern, with 37.5% of respondents citing it, followed by environmental issues at 21.2% and safety at 16.2%. When asked where smart technology was most needed, transportation again ranked first, ahead of safety and environmental concerns. Road congestion was highlighted by 34.2% of respondents as the top transportation issue, followed by infrastructure and parking.
The survey revealed significant differences in priorities based on age. Younger residents in their 20s and 30s prioritized improvements in public transportation, while those in their 40s and 50s focused more on parking. Residents aged 60 and older emphasized pedestrian safety and transport services for vulnerable groups. Late-night crime was the leading safety concern, cited by 22.5% of respondents, followed by sexual crimes and the safety of children commuting to school. Air quality was the dominant environmental concern, with fine dust mentioned by 29.2% of respondents.
