Rescue operations are currently delayed due to the major flood in Nepal. The golden time for disaster rescue operations, the first 72 hours, has passed, but roads have been washed away and the risk of a second flood is increasing, making helicopter landings difficult. The UN team had to evacuate in preparation for the emergency, while residents in the affected areas are sending distress signals while isolated.
Currently, at least three glacial lakes in the Himalayan highlands are at risk of overflowing, and images of glacier collapses have been captured. Stéphane Dujarric, spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, reported that they had to suspend their visit due to the issuance of a new flood warning. Rain is expected over the next week, with the risk of glacial lake collapse peaking on September 1.
There are concerns that this type of flood cannot be prevented with a monitoring system focused only on specific areas. The situation of rescue operations being halted and then resumed is repeating, and the number of missing persons is approaching 1,000. The death toll from the major flood has surged to 633.
